Statistics

According to the 2005 Arkansas Prevention Needs Assessment (APNA)Student Survey:

-The average age of first regular alcohol use in Arkansas is 14 years old.

-27% of 12th graders reported binge drinking within the past two weeks.

- 22.9% of AR 6, 8, 10, & 12th graders used alcohol in the past 30 days

-Students also indicate in the survey they usually drink alcohol at someone else’s house.

Data describing youths are from the Arkansas Prevention Needs Assessment Survey (APNA) conducted annually by ADAP to assess the prevalence of substance use and risk and protective factors for public school students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12.

Most of these data were reported in the Risk Factors for Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Arkansas 2005 Report prepared for ADAP by the Institute for Economic Advancement, Children's Research Center, University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Pregnancy Risk Assessment Management Survey (PRAMS)
A surveillance project of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health departments. PRAMS collects state-specific, population-based data on maternal attitudes and experiences before, during, and shortly after pregnancy, including maternal alcohol cosumption and related health issues.

Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)
A validated survey instrument designed to assess the level of involvement in risky behaviors of high school-aged youth.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires a state department of education to implement the survey biannually using a random sample of public high schools in the state.
